The Humble Stones Project:

Found a Rock? You're not an accident

You found a small painted stone with a message on it, and maybe my website on the back. The Humble Stones Project is a quiet experiment in curiosity and connection: one-of-a-kind rocks, hand-painted and left around

Santa Fe for someone like you to notice.

If this is your rock, you’re part of the story now.

What is The Humble Stones Project?

The Humble Stones Project is a quiet experiment in curiosity, belonging,
and nervous system gentleness.

I hand-paint individual stones with simple designs and short messages like stay curious, look again, or you are not too much. Then I leave them around Santa Fe in between places: park benches, walking paths, Little Free Libraries, coffee shop ledges.

There is no big announcement and no map that tells you where they are. The stones are meant to be found by people who are already looking up a little.

Each rock is a small embodied message that says:
you noticed something,
you were not an accident,
and this world still has room for gentle surprises made with you in mind.

How the stones work

Every stone has a story.

Before I release it into the world, I photograph it and give it a name.
Over time, I will add an archive here with:

a photo of each stone
the short message it carries
a brief note about why I chose those words
an optional hint about where it was released

If you find one in the wild, you will eventually be able to come back to this page, scroll through the archive, and see the stone you are holding right now.

If this is the stone you found

If you’re here because you picked up a painted rock with a short message on it and my website on the back, this page is for you.

At some point before today, I sat with this exact stone in my hand. I chose the words, painted it, and left it somewhere in Santa Fe for a curious person to notice.
Today, that person is you.

The fact that you saw it at all already tells me something: you still notice little things. You still have access to curiosity, even if life has been heavy or overwhelming. That matters.

You don’t have to do anything special with this rock. You can keep it, pass it on, leave it for someone else, or tuck it somewhere you’ll see it on hard days.

However you found it, you’re now part of its story. I’m glad you’re here.

Humble Stones Archive

A growing gallery of little messages released into the wild.

Rock 001: Stay

Hand-painted stone with a snowman, a tree, and the word “Stay” on a warm textured background.

Some days staying is the bravest thing you do.
Staying in your body for one more breath.
Staying with your feelings instead of abandoning yourself.
Staying in this ordinary moment, even when you’re tired of doing that.
This stone is a quiet reminder that you don’t have to fix or perform anything right now.
It’s enough to simply stay.

Released somewhere near a walking path in Santa Fe.

Rock 002 : You Belong

Hand-painted heart-shaped stone with branches, leaves, a small red circle, and the words "You Belong"

Belonging isn’t something you earn by being easy, quiet, or convenient.
It’s your birthright.
This stone is for the parts of you that have been left out, talked over,
or made to feel like too much. You are not an exception to belonging.
You are part of the human pile, exactly as you are.

Released somewhere near a place where people pass by and almost miss it.

Rock 003 : You Are Allowed to Hope

Hand-painted heart-shaped stone with branches, leaves, a small red circle, and the words “You are allowed to hope.”

Hope can feel dangerous when you’ve been disappointed enough times.
It can feel safer to expect nothing, to stay braced for impact.

This stone is a gentle permission slip for the part of you that still
wants to imagine something softer, kinder, or more possible than what
you’ve known.

You don’t have to hope for everything. You’re allowed
to hope for one small good thing.

Released somewhere that catches the light in Santa Fe.

Rock 005 : You Are Allowed to Take Up Space

Hand-painted heart-shaped stone with branches, leaves, a winter scene, and the words “You are allowed to take up space"

You were never meant to live your whole life shrunk down and apologizing.
You are not a nuisance, an interruption, or background scenery.

This stone is for the parts of you that learned to be small to stay safe:
the quiet kid, the over-apologizer, the one who edits themselves in real time.
You are allowed to take up physical space, emotional space, and story space.

You don’t have to explode to stop disappearing.
You are allowed to simply exist at your full size.

Released somewhere beneath the wide New Mexico sky.

Rock 006 : You Matter

Hand-painted stone with branches, leaves, and the words “You matter.”

There are days when it feels like it wouldn’t really change anything
if you were here or not. That feeling can burrow in and start to
sound like truth.

This stone is for the part of you that wonders if your existence
actually makes a difference. You matter in ways you will never be
able to measure. In small ripples. In quiet rooms. In how the world
shifts a tiny bit because you are in it.

You are not a background extra in your own life. You are the whole point.

Released somewhere, someone might be tempted to give up on themselves.

Rock 007 : Start Small

Hand-painted stone with branches, leaves, and the words “Start small"

When life feels like too much, “fix everything” is a trap.
It’s paralyzing, not motivating.

This stone is a reminder that nervous systems change in tiny moves:
one gentle breath, one honest text, one step outside, one kind thought
toward yourself. Start small enough that your body doesn’t flinch.

You don’t have to rebuild your whole life tonight.
You’re allowed to begin with something almost embarrassingly small.

Released somewhere quiet enough to notice the first step.

Rock 008 : Keep Going Beautiful Soul

Hand-painted stone shaped like a penguin with a small orange heart-shaped beak and the words “Keep going, beautiful soul.”

There are days when just getting through the morning feels like
crossing an ocean. No one else may ever see how hard you’re swimming.

This stone is for the part of you that is exhausted and still here.
The part that keeps showing up for people, for pets, for tiny moments
of beauty, even when you feel invisible. Your effort counts, even when
no one is clapping.

You don’t have to be graceful or perfect.
You only have to keep going, beautiful soul.

Released somewhere that needs a small, stubborn kind of hope.

Rock 009 : Take a Breath

Hand-painted stone with branches, leaves, and the words “take a breath"

When everything feels like too much, your thoughts will try to solve it
all at once. Your body just needs one thing first: a breath.

This stone is a reminder that pausing is not the same as giving up.
You’re allowed to stop for a moment, feel your feet on the ground,
and let one slow breath move all the way in and all the way out.

Nothing big has to change right now.
You can start by taking one kind, deliberate breath.

Released somewhere someone might forget to breathe until they see it.

Rock 010 : You Deserve Warmth

Hand-painted stone with a snowy blue background, green tree, and the words “You deserve warmth.”

If you grew up in emotional winter, warmth can feel suspicious.
Kindness can make you want to flinch or pull away.

This stone is for the part of you that learned to settle for crumbs,
cold rooms, and one-sided care. You deserve softness, patience, and
people who actually check on how your heart is doing — not just what
you’re doing for them.

You are allowed to seek out warmth instead of only surviving the cold.

Released somewhere that feels a little less lonely with a bit of light.
