Good and Plenty

Writer's picture: Jane Alice DavidsonJane Alice Davidson

My life.....a box of Good & Plenty,

Pastel shells hiding bold black licorice,

A candy not for every palate,

But for mine, it is the best.

I shared it generously,

Pouring handfuls into open palms,

Only to watch them spit it out,

Unaware of the treasure they’d been given.

Now, the box is light,

The rattle of a few pieces inside

A bittersweet sound.

I grieve the sweets I gave away

To those who never wanted them

Who saw no joy in the taste.

But what’s left is mine,

And I clutch it close,

Determined to savor every bite,

To honor its flavor and its meaning.

It is Good,

It is Plenty,

And it is mine to cherish.

Still, I dream of finding others

Who light up at the sight of the box,

Who smile at the sharpness

Of licorice beneath the candy coat,

And hold out their hands

Not to waste, but to share.

To them, I will give freely,

Knowing they understand

What it means to love something rare,

To taste my life in its boldest form,

And to revel in the joy
