From Humble Pie to Higher Learning: My Cannabis Education Journey

Writer: Jane Alice DavidsonJane Alice Davidson

If my journey with cannabis started with caregiving, it quickly evolved into something much bigger. What began as a mission to help my ex-husband through his brutal oropharyngeal cancer treatment turned into an obsession with the science, history, and potential of cannabis—and, eventually, a big part of life-long learning.

Diving Deeper: The Science of Cannabis

I wasn’t content just knowing that cannabis worked—I needed to understand why.

The Pandemic: A Crash Course in Cannabis

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect (or ironic). The pandemic forced the world to slow down—and I took full advantage of the stillness. With nowhere to go, I turned my home into a full-scale cannabis lab.

I spent countless hours immersed in research:

Cultivation & Growing – I learned about soil pH, nutrient cycles, indoor vs. outdoor grows, and how different conditions affect the plant. My grow operation became a science experiment, complete with LED lights, controlled humidity, and soil monitoring. I studied trichomes under a microscope to determine the perfect harvest window.

Cannabinoid Science – I dove into the world of CBD, THC, terpenes, and flavonoids, realizing that cannabis is about much more than just "getting high." It’s about balancing the endocannabinoid system—helping the body regulate pain, inflammation, sleep, and mood.

Consumption Methods – I explored smoking, vaping, edibles, tinctures, and topicals. Each method activates cannabinoids differently—inhaling provides immediate effects, while edibles metabolize through the liver for a slower but more powerful impact.

I quickly realized that cannabis isn’t just a plant—it’s a tool. And, like any tool, you need the right one for the job.

From Hobbyist to Professional: My Career in Cannabis

I saw an opportunity when the first fully recreational dispensary opened in my area. I wanted to take my knowledge beyond my own four walls. I started as a budtender, thinking it would be a part-time job.

But it became so much more.

I was promoted to Agent in Charge, a role that allowed me to expand my knowledge and leadership skills. In that position, I was responsible for:

  • Compliance & Regulations – Ensuring we followed every legal guideline, from seed to sale.

  • Customer Education – Helping people understand strains, dosing, and effects—especially first-time users.

  • Cash Handling & Inventory – Managing thousands of dollars in product and revenue daily.

This role gave me firsthand insight into the cannabis industry, deepening my knowledge of state regulations, consumer needs, and retail operations. It also reinforced my passion for education—helping people make informed, confident choices about cannabis.

Why I Left the Dispensary & What’s Next

While I loved working in the dispensary, corporate greed and profit over customer care started to wear on me. I didn’t just want to sell cannabis—I wanted to teach it.

That’s why I’m launching Cannabis University—a space dedicated to honest, science-backed cannabis education.

What You’ll Find in Cannabis University

  • Beginner Guides – Breaking down cannabinoids, terpenes, and how cannabis interacts with the body.

  • Growing Tips – Whether you want to grow at home or just understand the process.

  • Infusion & Cooking – From canna butter to tinctures, make your own edibles safely.

  • History & Stigma – How misinformation shaped cannabis laws (and how we dismantle it).

This is for anyone curious about cannabis—whether you’re new, experienced, or simply want to learn without judgment.

Follow along as we explore the science, history, and future of cannabis together!
